The first Festival of the Sea, arranged by Y Môr a Ni, will be taking place in Milford Haven on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th March.
On Saturday 8th March, activities will be taking place at Milford Waterfront between 10am and 5pm.
At the Waterfront Gallery, join local artists Dawn Steward and Janet Taylor as they each run art workshops between 11am-12:30pm and 2pm-3:30pm. Visitors will get the opportunity to create either a fabric marine-themed bowl or a sea-inspired inked tile. Workshops are limited to 12 attendees each.
In the Link Building, visitors will get the chance to learn about Ocean Literacy from exhibitors including:
- The Darwin Centre who will be celebrating marine life at the small scale, through plankton samples and microscopes
- Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum who will be promoting renewable energy in Milford Haven and how it benefits us all
- Câr y Môr who will be showcasing and selling their range of seaweed-themed products
- The Field Studied Council who will be sharing information about the diversity of marine species in Pembrokeshire through touch tanks, photo quizzes and running BioBlitz/ Strandline sessions on Milford Beach
- Project Seagrass will be bringing the fun in their interactive stall, raising awareness of seagrass across Wales
And outside on Mackerel Quay, we’ll be joined by:
- The Royal Navy who will be talking about career opportunities and showing what it’s like to be onboard a Royal Navy ship through VR
- Natural Resources Wales and Pembrokeshire Marine SAC who will be promoting their Natur am Byth project and showcasing real-life diving equipment
- The RNLI will be sharing information about water safety, offer live life jacket safety checks and a chance to meet ‘Stormy Daniels’
- Merched y Môr will be promoting their noble cause of rowing across the Atlantic to raise money for charity. They will bring their 11m boat for the public to see.
- Pembrokeshire Coast National Park who will be spreading awareness of accessibility across Pembrokeshire by bringing their beach wheelchair.
No booking is required for the Saturday, and visitors are encouraged to come along and find out more about the work of Y Môr a Ni and celebrate the sea, coast and its wildlife in Milford Haven. Free parking is available on Mackerel Quay.
On Sunday 9th March, Festival of the Sea takes over The Torch Theatre!
The programme of activities includes:
All day: Meet our friends at Darwin Centre, National Trust, Sea Trust, Field Studies Council and the Cleddau Project on their stands throughout the Torch
All day: Talk a walk on the wild side through Milford Youth Matters and Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum’s marine-themed exhibition - open throughout March!
11am: Sea Trust x Willow and Waves. Uncover the issue of marine plastics with the Sea Trust before getting crafty and creating your own marine plastic treasure.
11am and 2pm: Join local artist Fran Evans during her morning and afternoon sessions of art & craft and discover what the sea around Milford means to you!
1pm: Lily Pauls: Journey into the marine world around Pembrokeshire and find out how Natural Resources Wales works to protect it
2pm: Get your hands dirty with Câr Y Môr and help make some bio-fertiliser - from seaweed!
4pm: Lou Luddington: Dive into the wonders of the deep with an award-winning marine photographer, diver and author. Lou will also showcase her beautiful new book ‘Reflections’.
5pm: Mark Burton: From puffins to shearwaters and porpoise to seals, venture onto Skomer with Mark and discover what wildlife calls the island home.
From 7pm, Festival of the Sea will become Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum’s ‘Living Coast’ event with talks from a range of local marine champions.
Booking is not required for activities at the Torch Theatre. Pay and display car parking is available at Lower Charles Street, Market Square and Robert Street.
